AFERIY Nomad400 P040 Portable Power Station | 400W 256Wh

I bought my P040 to use as an UPS for remote LAN equipment that does not have a backup generator. As an UPS performance is comparable with traditional UPS hardware but with better displays (I have several APC UPS boxes). But the P040 is more cost effective (IMO) in both initial cost and lifetime battery cost. Maybe newer UPS hardware is better but the sealed lead-acid batteries in my traditional UPS units rarely last over two years.

I'll be upfront: I own AFERIY's larger P280 (800W/2048Wh) and have tested it extensively for ham radio use. When I needed something smaller for a specific dual-purpose job �� bridging a 15-second Generac whole-house generator cutover for a 21-inch iMac, plus occasional portable use �� the Nomad400 landed on my short list. At $169 on Amazon it's the same unit as the AFERIY P040 sold on their own website; AFERIY simply uses different branding for different sales channels. Same hardware, same specs.

Here's what I actually found after it arrived.

--- BUILD AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS ---

Solid. Not premium, but nothing feels cheap either. The handle is well-designed and at 8.8 lbs it's genuinely portable in a way that larger stations aren't. Two AC outlets on the front (not one, as some reviews incorrectly state), plus USB-C PD 100W, USB-A QC 3.0, and a 12V DC cigarette lighter output. The LCD display is clear and easy to read.

One note: per international shipping norms, the battery ships below 30% charge. Plug it in before you do anything else. Full charge from near-empty takes about 1.2 hours.

--- UPS PERFORMANCE (THE MAIN EVENT) ---

This is why I bought it and I'm happy to report it works exactly as advertised. The setup couldn't be simpler: plug the Nomad400 into the wall, plug the iMac into the Nomad400, power it on, press the AC button. The display shows a UPS indicator so you know it's active. Done.

The switchover when wall power is cut is perfect and completely silent. My iMac never blinked �� no reboot, no hesitation, nothing. AFERIY rates the switchover at under 10ms and based on my testing that's accurate. For context, most desktop computer power supplies can ride through interruptions up to about 20ms, so the Nomad400's sub-10ms response has plenty of margin.

In UPS/passthrough mode the fan stays completely off. This is significant if it's sitting on or near your desk �� many competing units run their fans constantly. The Nomad400 is silent in standby.

The LCD dims after a period of inactivity but does not turn off, so you can glance at it any time and see exactly what the iMac is drawing from the wall.

One thing worth knowing: the unit has auto-shutoff timers. If AC output is enabled but no load is detected for 8 hours, it will shut off. If USB output is enabled with no load for 3 minutes, same result. In my setup this is a complete non-issue �� my iMac is set to never sleep and the Nomad400's display shows a steady 56W draw, which the unit registers without question. But if your computer does sleep and drops to a very low draw, it's worth understanding before you trust it overnight.

--- PORTABLE VERSATILITY ---

The USB-C PD 100W port will charge a 15-inch MacBook Air roughly 3 times on a full battery, and a modern Android phone (Pixel-class) around 12 times. For camping or travel those are useful numbers.

The 12V DC output is a genuine asset for ham radio operators and amateur astronomers. I plan to use it to power a Celestron AVX mount and 12V astronomy camera at dark sky sites �� no need to run the AC inverter for 12V devices, which saves capacity and runs cleaner.

The Nomad400 also handles a Starlink Mini dish comfortably (roughly 20-30W draw) for extended sessions.

--- A NOTE FOR HAM RADIO OPERATORS ---

I did a quick RF check after setup. In UPS passthrough mode with the AC inverter essentially bypassed, I detected no meaningful RFI on the HF bands I checked. That said, I'm using this as a UPS for a computer �� I'm not running the radio simultaneously with the Nomad400 on AC, so RFI is not a concern for my use case. If you're evaluating this specifically for POTA activations running off battery (not mains), that's a different test and one worth doing on your own bands before committing.

For comparison, the larger P280 generates some RFI on certain bands under load �� notably 15M with the AC inverter running. The Nomad400 is a simpler unit with no Bluetooth, no WiFi, no app �� which in theory means fewer noise sources. But I'll leave definitive RF characterization for someone with more time to do it properly.

--- A FEW HONEST CAVEATS ---

Warranty language is inconsistent. The included user manual says 24 months. AFERIY's website and some Amazon copy references a 7-year warranty. Before purchase I'd recommend emailing [****] to get the actual warranty terms confirmed in writing for Amazon-purchased units.

The unit has no app, no Bluetooth, no WiFi. That's a feature if you value simplicity (fewer noise sources, nothing to configure), and a limitation if you want remote monitoring.

No solar panel is included. The included cable is MC4 to DC5521 for solar input up to 120W / 30V max.

--- BOTTOM LINE ---

For the specific job of bridging a whole-house generator cutover for a computer, the Nomad400 is essentially perfect. Silent fan, clean UPS switchover, clear display, and 256Wh of LiFePO4 battery that will last well over a decade of daily cycling...

This now is with me when I'm on a trip... Life saver!

It does a good job.

I've zero out the power and charge it back up to full in an hour (AC).

I've ran a small coffee maker (775 watts)on it and it did not like it much.

But did do the job.

Over all, for the price and what you get. It's a good power station.

A brief outage is where this size makes sense. The P040 can keep our modem, router, a lamp, and several phones going without taking over the room. I like that I can carry it upstairs with one hand and put it back in the closet when power returns.
